Beginner Bag - PDF Sewing Pattern

The Beginner Bag PDF sewing pattern is the perfect bag to start your bag making journey! It's made with the absolute novice bag maker in mind and has very in depth explanations of everything from fusing interfacing to zipper installation. Quilting is optional.

But this bag isn't just for the beginner, the simple but stylish design makes it perfect for production sewing or just letting one's creativity run wild. It's also perfect for sewing with panels, as you easily adjust the size of the bag to the size of the panel. It has a zipper top closure, is fully lined and has open slip pockets. It can be made any size you wish, instructions for how to adjust the size is in the pattern. It makes a super cute makeup bag if made smaller, or the perfect beach tote if made in a bigger size. BASIC SKILLS NECESSARY

This is a pattern for the absolute beginner bag maker. No prior knowledge other than basic sewing skills is assumed.

MEASUREMENTS

Finished size: ~12” (30cm) high, ~13 ½” (34cm) wide and 4” (10cm) deep at the base. But can be made any literally size, instructions are in the pattern.

SUPPLIES NEEDED

Fabric:

⅔ yard (60cm) - Exterior: Cotton fabric, vinyl, faux leather or cork fabric. More fabric will be needed if you wish to fussy cut specific parts of a print.

½ yard” (40cm) - Lining: Cotton fabric.

Interfacing:

14” x 28” (40x75cm) - Foam interfacing: By Annie’s Soft & Stable, Pellon Flex­Foam, Bosal In-R-Form or similar.

14” x 28” (40x75cm) Fusible web: Heat n Bond Lite, Vliesofix Bondaweb or similar, only needed if working with cotton exterior and non fusible foam. The kind you use for appliqué.

1 ⅙ yard (100cm) - Thin fusible interfacing: Vilene G700 woven fusible, Pellon SF101 Shape-Flex or similar.

10” x 4” (25x10cm) - Heavy interfacing: Pellon Peltex 71, Fast 2 Fuse Heavy or similar very sturdy interfacing to stabilize the bottom. If you don’t have this, a piece of sturdy cardboard or even a thin plastic cutting board can be used if you’re not planning on washing your bag.

Notions:

1 - #5 Zipper 14” (35cm) (or longer): Should match the exterior fabric.

Double sided sewing tape: I warmly recommend this, but it’s not necessary.

Rotary cutter, cutting mat and ruler.

Fabric clips.
