A4 vs US Letter - Which Paper Size Should I Use?

Pink Pony Design PDF patterns are designed to print on both A4 and US Letter paper.

So, in the case of Pink Pony Patterns, you can simply use whichever paper size is standard for your printer.

What's the difference?

A4 is the standard paper size used in most countries outside North America.

US Letter is the standard paper size commonly used in the United States and Canada.

The sheets are slightly different in size and proportions, but Pink Pony Design pattern pieces are positioned so they fit on both.

Choose the correct paper size in your printer settings

Before printing, check that the paper size selected in your printer settings matches the paper you're actually using, it's however usually pre-selected with the standard one for your region:

  • Printing on A4 paper → select A4
  • Printing on US Letter paper → select Letter

Then print using Actual Size / 100% rather than Fit or Scale to Fit. Adobe confirms that Actual Size prints without scaling, whereas Fit can enlarge or reduce the PDF to fit the selected paper.

Check the test square

Print the page containing the test square first and measure it before printing the rest of the pattern.

If the test square measures correctly, your pattern is printing at the intended size.

Something still doesn't look right?

If your test square is too small or too large, see My Pattern Is Printing Too Small or Too Large for the next things to check.

Happy sewing!
