The Stockholm Bag is a spacious, classic tote designed for everyday life, work and travel. With room for a laptop, an extra sweater and all the other things that somehow end up coming along, it makes a wonderful large everyday bag or carry-on.
It features a large exterior pocket, an optional recessed zipper closure, a generous zippered pocket in the lining and additional open pockets for keeping smaller essentials easy to find.
The Stockholm actually got its name because I originally designed it as my own carry-on for a trip to Stockholm. I wanted something stylish and uncomplicated that could hold everything I needed while travelling, but would work just as well for a full day out once I arrived. I ended up using it so much that it became one of those bags I kept reaching for long after the trip was over. ❤️

SKILL LEVEL
Intermediate
The Stockholm Bag is best suited to an intermediate bag maker or a confident beginner who is comfortable with basic bag-making techniques. You'll be sewing through multiple layers, installing zippers and working with stabilisers, but the pattern includes detailed step-by-step instructions and photos to guide you through the construction.
FINISHED SIZE
Approximately 12" (30cm) high x 18" (45cm) wide at the top x 5" (13cm) deep at the base.
FABRIC & SUPPLIES
Fabric:
Exterior - ⅔ Yard (65cm):
Vinyl, faux leather, cork, cotton or canvas. Additional fabric may be needed for directional prints.
Contrast fabric - ½ Yard (45cm):
For the front pocket, cotton is recommended, but vinyl, faux leather, cork or canvas can also be used if your sewing machine can comfortably handle the additional bulk.
Lining - 1 yard (90cm):
Cotton fabric or your preferred lining fabric.
Vinyl - ⅓ Yard (30cm)
Vinyl, faux leather, cork or another non-fraying material for the handles and zipper pocket trim. If you're already using vinyl for the exterior, you can simply use 1 full yard (90 cm) of that fabric instead.
Interfacing/stabiliser:
Heavy weight fusible interfacing of 20” (50cm) width - 1.4 Yard (130cm):
Pellon Peltex 71F or 72F, Decovil 1 Heavy, Fast 2 Fuse heavy or similar.
Woven fusible interfacing - 1 yard (90cm):
Vilene G700 woven fusible, Pellon SF101 Shape-Flex or similar for all cotton lining fabric. If you have a cotton exterior, you need enough of this interfacing to interface all exterior pieces too.
Hardware/notions:
Zipper - 12” (30cm):
Or longer, for zipper pocket in lining, can be size #3 or #5 as per your preference.
* Zipper - 18” (45cm):
Optional: Or longer, if you wish a zipper closure for the bag, a #5 size zipper is recommended.
* Metal zipper end -1:
You can use one of these, or you can sew a zipper tab of your own design.
Magnetic snap - 1:
Optional: If you want it as a closure for your tote instead of the zipper.
Bag feet - 5:
Optional: But gives a nice look and protects the bottom of your bag.
Non-permanent marker:
For making temporary marks, that can be removed with water, heat or similar.
Double sided tape.
100/16 sturdy sewing machine needle (preferably a topstitch kind).
Fabric glue.
Rotary cutter, cutting mat and ruler.
Fabric clips.
