The Florence Frayed Bag is a beautifully structured handbag with a twist - its exposed, intentionally frayed seams give it a distinctive look that's both relaxed and surprisingly polished. It's a wonderful design for showing off beautiful fabrics, and the raw-edge construction means the fabric itself becomes part of the design.

Despite its compact appearance, Florence has room for your everyday essentials. Inside you'll find a zippered pocket for smaller valuables and a slip pocket that's perfect for keeping your phone or other frequently used items easy to reach.

The handles can be sewn directly to the bag or attached using optional handle connectors, giving you another way to change the finished look. And because those gorgeous frayed edges are meant to be seen, Florence is especially fun for experimenting with fabric textures. ❤️

The PDF sewing pattern is fully templated and includes both inch and centimeter measurements, detailed step-by-step instructions and lots of photos to guide you through the construction. A full YouTube video tutorial is also available if you prefer to sew along with me.

SKILL LEVEL

Intermediate

The Florence Frayed Bag is best suited to an intermediate bag maker or a confident beginner who is comfortable with basic bag-making techniques. You'll be installing a zipper and working through multiple layers, while the exposed seam construction requires a little extra thought.

The pattern includes detailed step-by-step instructions and photos to guide you through the entire construction.

FINISHED SIZE

Approximately 9" (23cm) long, 5 1⁄2” (14cm) high and 4 (10cm) deep at the bottom.

FABRIC & SUPPLIES

Fabric:

Exterior and lining - 12” (30cm):
Choose a reasonably sturdy fabric that frays well, such as denim, canvas, panama, home decor fabric or bouclé. The fabric will be fused to interfacing, so it needs to be able to withstand pressing from the right side. Additional fabric may be needed for directional prints.

15”x15” (40x40cm) - Vinyl:
For the handles and zipper pocket details. Choose a vinyl, faux leather or similar material with edges that can be left raw. Avoid anything too thick or heavy, as the elegant, slim handles are folded into 8 layers during construction.

Zipper pocket lining - 8” x 8” (20x20cm):
A scrap of your preferred lining fabric, such as quilting cotton.

Interfacing/stabiliser:

16” x 16” (41x41cm) - Double sided, fusible heavy interfacing:
Pellon Peltex 72, Fast 2 Fuse Heavy or similar.
I strongly recommend using a double-sided fusible interfacing for Florence. If yours is only fusible on one side, you can use a lightweight fusible web such as HeatnBond Lite or Vliesofix Bondaweb to fuse the other side to the fabric.

Hardware/notions:

#3 Zipper - 8” (20cm):
Or longer for zipper pocket closure.

Bag lock - 1.
Use your preferred style, such as a turn lock, click lock or magnetic closure.

Strap anchors - 4:
Optional: For attaching the handles. I used Emmaline Bags "Long John" strap anchors, but other suitable styles can be used.

Small strap anchors - 2:
Optional: For attaching a shoulder/crossbody strap. I used mini anchors from Sallie Tomato, but other suitable styles can be used.

Double sided rivets - 4:
8mm or smaller cap. To attach the handles.

Bag feet - 4:
Optional. For an elegant look and protects the bottom of your bag.

Non-permanent marker:
For making temporary marks, that can be removed with water or heat.

Double sided sewing tape.
100/16 sturdy sewing machine needle (preferably a topstitch kind).
Rotary cutter, cutting mat and ruler.
Fabric clips.
