How to Print PDF Patterns at the Correct Size

Printing a PDF sewing pattern should be straightforward, but printer settings can sometimes resize or reposition the pages without making it particularly obvious.

This guide will walk you through the recommended settings for printing Pink Pony Design patterns at the correct size.

Before you print

For the most reliable results, I recommend:

• Downloading the PDF to a computer or laptop
• Opening it in Adobe Acrobat Reader
• Printing at 100% / Actual Size
• Printing and measuring the test page first

Once the test square measures correctly, you can go ahead and print the pattern pages you need.

1. Download and open your pattern in Adobe Acrobat Reader

For the most reliable printing experience, I recommend downloading your pattern to your computer and opening it in Adobe Acrobat Reader rather than printing directly from your web browser.

Acrobat Reader gives you clear control over the settings that matter when printing sewing patterns, such as Actual Size, paper size and page orientation. It also means that the print settings shown throughout this Help Center will match what you see on your screen, making any problems much easier to troubleshoot.

Other PDF viewers and browser print windows may work perfectly well, but their settings and scaling options can vary. If you're having trouble getting a pattern to print at the correct size, opening the downloaded PDF in Acrobat Reader is a good first troubleshooting step.

Adobe Acrobat Reader is free. You do not need Adobe Acrobat Pro or a paid Adobe subscription to print your pattern.

Download Adobe Acrobat Reader from Adobe

Once your pattern has downloaded, open the PDF in Acrobat Reader and select File → Print.

2. Select the correct paper size

Make sure the paper size selected in your printer settings matches the paper you're actually using.

Pink Pony Design pattern pages are designed to fit on both A4 and US Letter paper.

If you're using A4 paper, select A4. If you're using US Letter paper, select US Letter.

It's worth checking this even if your printer normally selects the correct size automatically.

3. Select Actual Size

In the Adobe Acrobat Reader Print window, look for Page Sizing & Handling.

Select:

Size → Actual Size

Do not select Fit.

Actual Size prints the PDF without intentionally scaling the page to fit the printer's printable area, while Fit can enlarge or reduce the page. For sewing patterns, that change in scale can alter the size of your pattern pieces.

If a scale percentage is shown, it should normally be 100%.

4. Leave Orientation set to Auto

Under Orientation, select:

Auto

I recommend allowing Acrobat to choose the appropriate orientation rather than manually forcing the document to Portrait or Landscape.

Forcing a particular orientation can sometimes position part of the PDF outside the printable area, causing part of a pattern piece to disappear off the edge of the paper even though the pattern itself is printing at the correct scale.

Check the print preview before printing. The complete pattern page should be visible within the paper shown in the preview.

5. Print and measure the test page first

Before printing all of the pattern pages, print just the page containing the test square.

Measure the printed square carefully with a ruler and compare it with the measurement shown on the pattern.

For example, if the square is marked as 1" / 2.5 cm, it should measure exactly 1" / 2.5 cm after printing.

If the test square is the correct size, your scaling is correct.

If it measures too small or too large, don't print the remaining pages yet. Check that Actual Size / 100% is selected and that Fit or another scaling option hasn't been applied.

6. Print only the pattern pages you need

You usually don't need to print the entire PDF.

Pink Pony Design patterns include instructions, photographs and other information that can be read directly from your screen. Some pattern pieces may also be simple rectangles that can be cut using the measurements given in the pattern rather than printed as templates.

Check the individual pattern instructions to see which pages actually need to be printed.

This can save quite a lot of paper and ink.

Can I print from my phone or tablet?

I strongly recommend printing Pink Pony Design patterns from a computer or laptop whenever possible.

Phones, tablets and mobile printing apps can handle PDFs differently and may apply scaling or other settings that aren't always obvious.

In some cases, one part of a pattern can even print incorrectly despite the test square appearing to be the correct size.

Downloading the PDF to a computer and opening it in Adobe Acrobat Reader gives you much more control over the print settings and makes troubleshooting considerably easier.

Quick printing checklist

Before printing the full pattern, check that:

• The PDF has been downloaded to your computer or laptop
• You're printing from Adobe Acrobat Reader
• The correct A4 or US Letter paper size is selected
• Actual Size is selected
  
• Fit is not selected
• Orientation is set to Auto
• The complete page is visible in the print preview
• You've printed and measured the test square
• You're printing only the pattern pages you actually need

If all of those look right, you're ready to print your pattern.
